2009/2010 Season
Breathe Art Theatre Project is excited to be producing its
6th Cross Border season of contemporary, smart plays in Detroit
and Windsor. Featuring some of the best young professional
talent in the metro-area, the stories of the 2009/2010 season
are extraordinary in their conversations, razor-sharp in their
images, and shocking in their portrayal of the future, all
while exploring the pain and humour of modern life.
LONELY PLANET
Written by Steven Dietz
Directed by Aaron Moore*
September 25 to October 11, 2009 (Detroit)
October 16 to October 17, 2009 (Windsor)
What is the measure of a friendship? What is one’s
obligation to community? And how far would you go to make
your loved one see the truth?
The award-winning Lonely Planet tells the story of Jody,
a knowledgeable man who refuses to leave the confines of the
small map store he runs, and Carl, his friend and frequent
visitor. The play begins with Jody explaining how he found
a chair placed in his store one day, without notice, by Carl.
Pretty soon, the store is littered with chairs, each belonging
to someone they knew in the community. The chairs are Carl’s
direct challenge to Jody’s refusal to look beyond his
store. Jody must acknowledge the issues surrounding them and
bear witness to the problems. The bonds of their friendship
are stretched, snapped, reformed, and revisited in this gem
of a play by one of the most produced playwrights in North
America.

MR. MARMALADE
Written by Noah Haidle
Directed by Kevin Young*
February 12 to February 28, 2010 (Detroit)
March 5 and March 6, 2010 (Windsor)
Four-year-old Lucy’s imaginary friend Mr. Marmalade
doesn't have enough time for her. He has a personal assistant
to beat up, a cocaine addiction to nurse, and a plethora of
pornography to peruse. Larry, Lucy’s only real friend,
has problems of his own, owning the youngest suicide attempt
in the history of New Jersey. “Alternately hilarious
and heartbreaking,” says The New Yorker of Michigan
playwright Haidle’s script. Mr. Marmalade is a savage
black comedy about what it takes to grow up in a society rampant
with excess information.

LOVE BOMBING AFTER
THE EARTHQUAKE
A World Premiere
Written and Directed by Demetri Vacratsis
April 16 to May 2, 2010 (Detroit)
May 6 and May 7, 2010 (Windsor)
A year after a catastrophic earthquake leaves a couple struggling
to survive, a high-ranking security officer orchestrates a
series of events that lead to the interrogation of an ex-army
officer. The questions target the officer's relationship with
a mysterious woman, and then hone in on a string of subversive
incidents. As the play shifts between the interrogation cell
and events of the past, we learn that the characters live
by their own individual moral codes, and in many cases, their
acts are as evil as they are justified. The result is a suspensful
work of misconception, coercion and perseverance.
Cast: Andrew Huff*, Kevin T. Young*, Caroline Price, Shannon
